What is leadership? Leadership is a difficult term to actually define. See my leadership definition post for more.  What is truly known is that leadership and leaders are the driving force that gives direction to society as a whole and influences change within an organization. The following article will describe some of the most influential leadership styles and how they are used.

Visionary: A visionary is needed for new direction. A good visionary can share a dream and outline the steps that are needed from others to accomplish the same dream and see it through.  This is also one of the best 6 traits of good leadership.

Commanding: This is more of a military style of leadership. Many people will give direct orders with little to no sharing, vision or praise for others involved. Commanding leadership should only be used in crisis.

Democratic: This is one type of leadership styles that allows a group of people to organize and direct their way through a problem. By allowing people to form an opinion and vote on an issue a consensus can be met and the crisis can be solved in a way that everyone can agree on. A leader works as a mediator or governing body in this leadership style.

Presidential: This type of leadership style has a leader who leads a team but is only required when a team requires someone to make a ruling on their actions or when there is a problem.

Celebrity: Celebrity leadership is where a team works to manage a person’s image. The celebrity leader is more of a symbol and actually does not have much involvement in terms of leadership, but serves only as a symbol.

By using these styles of leadership and by being able to adapt forms of leadership to fit a situation a leader can:

-Solve problems appropriately

-Solve problems quickly in times of crisis

-Ensure that others are allowed input into various challenges and problems

-Stay seen in a positive light.

-Be available when needed to make a definitive ruling on an issue.

-Be seen as someone with a vision that can be carried out and completed with proper goals

By studying various leadership styles, a leader can identify areas that they may need to work on, or find new ways to solve persistent problems within a business or within life. Quite often, people resort directly to a commanding leadership role and this can lead to very restrictive leadership that is not for the best in all scenarios. Branching out and trying different forms of leadership styles can create the best and most influential leaders.
